In the late Renaissance textile and leather portières became a frequent item in the interior decoration of Italian villas and palaces, often in line with other furniture elements. Even though they are repeatedly mentioned, or illustrated, in documentary sources, the few surviving examples are usually out of their original context. The conservation treatment of a gilt leather portière (16th century) was an opportunity to examine closer one of these artefacts. In this special case it was also requested to provide it with a support structure able to suggest the artefact’s original function and hanging, and respecting at the same time its mechanical characteristics. In order to support and protect the unlined artefact, an appropriate panel was chosen, provided with a magnetic tensioning system. This special mounting device is able to follow the slight movements of the leather due to microclimatic fluctuations. Methodologies and materials adopted during conservation treatment are also discussed.
