The poster describes, analyzes, and compares the different pictorial techniques used to make manuscript books, in particular, a rare book that was used as a guide and model for artists, professors, masters, craftsmen, fraternities and schools of the 18th–19th centuries in Portugal and Brazil. The “Nova Escola Para Aprender a Ler, Escrever, e Contar” (A New School Method Teaching to Read, Write and Count), by Manuel de Andrade de Figueiredo, was printed at the Bernardo da Costa Carvalho publishing house in 1722, and contains 156 pages and 46 pictures. This book had a strong influence in Brazil, more specifically in Minas Gerais, a region that was very important during the colonial period, where several different religious fraternities had been created, following the discovery of gold at the beginning of the 18th century. This printed book teaches people to read by using different handwriting and also how to draw and count. It describes recipes, decoration, techniques, pictorial material and tools that were used to make Sodalities books, or manuscripts. The poster describes the recipes and formulas mentioned in Manuel de Figueiredo’s book, comparing them to the Book of Commitments that was created in Minas Gerais and used by the religious Sodalities of the 18th–19th centuries. The methodology involves technical-scientific analysis, photographic, radiologic techniques, micro-chemical and physical-chemical methods of destructive and non-destructive analyses (FTIR, XRD, SEM, PY-GC-MS), to identify characteristics such as: water marks, preservation status, organic and inorganic material such as loads, pigments and agglutinants and pictorial techniques. This research has revealed several similarities between the Commitment Book in Minas and the book under study.
