The conditions of ion bombardment for obtaining characteristic patterns of various fibers free from artifacts on sample surfaces are systematically investigated, and application to differentiation of fibers of different origin and treatment is illustrated. The characteristic etched patterns of various fibers including cellulose fibers, protein fibers, PAN, and PET fibers are presented and a specific feature of these patterns are discussed. -- AATA
