Needlelike precipitates found on an iron object from Bacqah Valley, Jordan, were examined in order to determine whether they had earlier been correctly identified as nitrides (in previous microstructural research). The investigation indicated that these structures are carbides. Microanalytical techniques have opened up a new scale of examination that can be helpful in the interpretation of the fabrication history of archaeological artifacts. -- AATA
