Adaptive use of old buildings must be appropriate to the scale and the style of the original structure. Specific projects of several firms dealing in building renovation are discussed. The emphasis is upon the criteria that a rehabilitation project must meet in order to qualify for tax credits, the most important of which is the preservation or reconstruction of original elements, of architecturally significant features. Hidden architectural elements which complicate a rehabilitation should be taken into account in advance as a matter of course; examples of problems are identified. For project certification by the National Park Service, thorough research and documentation of the project are required. -- AATA
