Chinese text claimed that cinnabar dissolved in vinegar and saltpetre. A common contaminant of saltpetre is salt. The nitrate in acid solution oxidized the chloride to chlorine, which attacked the cinnabar to give mercury (II) chloride, and sulphur. The sulphur was oxidized to sulphate. Copper sulphate was added which is an excellent catalyst for the reaction.
