The mechanism of thermoluminescence and its use in dating ceramics is discussed. If particles are assumed to be less efficient at trap filling thin beta and Ü3 particles, then the thermoluminescent date agrees with the archaeological date. Sources of error which still remain in the method are discussed. -- AATA
