The conclusions reached by J. Bruyn are tested by a series of simple graphs, in which each dot represents the top right-hand corner of a painting when the bottom left-hand corner is located at zero. Panels and canvases were treated separately. This investigation provides no evidence to support the groups of larger formats distinguished by Bruyn. Preferences for a given size differ from painter to painter. There exists a number of clearly distinct sizes in the works of Rembrandt in particular, but these are seldom or never found in the work of other artists. Bruyn's hypothesis regarding the sizes and old names for them is not confirmed; panels up to 20 x 25 centimeters were sometimes used for tronies. Sizes of panels varied from maker to maker, and thus far no significant regularity is discernible. -- AATA
