Abstract
Publishes the results of the technical examination of two possible early works of Giorgione by means of infrared photography. Beneath the surface of the London Adoration of the Magi the process revealed sepia sketches which indicate that in the planning stage the composition differed considerably from the present arrangement. An examination of the Holy Family in Washington also brought to light three drawn forms that were later covered up by the paint. The bistre sketches thus discovered-executed on the ground of the picture-now furnish confirmation of the statement by Vasari to the effect that Giorgione had not drawn on carta. This is proof that in writing the life of Giorgione, Vasari obviously had the use of excellent documentary material. In this connection the information value of Vasari's biography of the Venetian artist will call for future reexamination, especially in respect to the assertion that Giorgione totally changed his style as from approximately 1507-this tending to permit a cautious assumption regarding the existence of a possible late oeuvre of the artist. -- AATA
