The painting Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child by the Master of Frankfurt underwent a brief examination in 1976, when it entered the collection of the National Gallery, Washington, D.C. The next year, cleavage of the paint layer was noticed and the painting was submitted to a technical examination and treatment. Describes the condition of the oak panel, paint layers, and former restorations (including a great deal of unnecessary overpainting) Discusses the underdrawing, handling of the paint, and palette-technical details discerned from ultraviolet photography, x-radiography, and other techniques.
