The painting was in a bad condition with decaying stretchers, a poor method of stretching, an earlier relining, and repair, an incomplete frame, darkened and dirty varnish and overpainting. The painting was relined, retouched using talens artists oil colours over a dammar varnish, then varnished with rembrandt retouching varnish spray.
