Abstract
The article provides a very brief account of the discovery of 22 plaster human figures at the site of 'Ain Ghazal. The statues pertain to a Neolithic occupation dated to about 8,000 B.P. according to the article. Two basic representations of people are represented. The larger statues are full figures of modelled plaster over a core of reeds, twigs, and grasses held together by a coarsely twined fabric. Examples of this category were found together in a carefully placed arrangement. A second category of smaller figures shows careful modelling of facial features only. The smaller busts seem to be placed in an arc at the foot of the larger specimens. All were found in a pit that perforated the floor of a repeatedly used building. These statues resemble other statues found at Jericho. As at Jericho, the different sizes may represent adults and children. The article concludes with reference to other important 'Ain Ghazal finds and a reference to the sophistication of the people who made them.
