Basic techniques of applying spray lacquer finish are described, using as an example a maple and purpleheart desk. Most problems commonly faced in lacquering a piece of furniture, such as spraying inside corners and finishing both sides of a flat panel exposed to heavy wear, are exemplified by the desk. No staining or masking is required for the desk. Safe working conditions, including use of a spray booth, are advocated. Applying lacquer is a multistep process involving selection of lacquer and alternating sanding and application of lacquer coats. An inset in the article describes the workings of a siphon-feed spray gun. Techniques of spraying are described, along with commonly-encountered pitfalls. A particular problem encountered on older pieces of furniture results when traces of silicone from old furniture polish prevents the lacquer from adhering to the wood. The final step, undertaken after the final coat has dried over night, is rubbing out the finish. Diagrams and photographs accompanying the article illustrate all the techniques discussed.
