Abstract
The author answers an earlier letter (5/81) to the AIC Newsletter requesting information on the potential of BHT to yellow when used as an antioxidant. Under warm, dark conditions, the polyethylene containers often used for museum storage (which may contain. 1 milligrams per square centimeter BHT), may form a yellowish surface deposit, and this may stain the contents. BHT becomes yellow because, as an anti-oxidant, it is an efficient trap for free radicals. Quinone-like compounds formed as a product are yellow. Rather than scrapping the use of these containers, the author recommends regular cleaning and washing, along with cool storage.
