Differences in Eastern and Western spatial concepts and use of folding screens are reflected by divergence in pictorial composition, folding configurations and use of hinges and frames. As a result, lack of understanding by Westerners of the purpose and structure of Japanese folding screens has led to damage from disassembly, dispersion of panels, remounting and improper, flat, display, which can cause splitting. The history of screens indicates that while Western folding screens derived much inspiration from the East, their core structure (for paper screens, often a linen covered strainer, originating from the European wallpaper tradition and frequently made by amateurs) is less developed than that of Japanese folding screens (a wooden lattice covered by paper layers, made by highly skilled mounters). Techniques of mounting Oriental screens, including modifications recently published, can aid the conservation of Western screens. In addition, innovative Western conservation techniques and materials can be used for adhesive removal and local treatment of tears and dents in Oriental screens, avoiding remounting which could result in loss of original material and upset the balance of tensions within the screen.
