A recent scientific survey of Cappella Brancacci (Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence), reveals that frescoes by Masolino in the vault and the two lunettes on the side walls have been completely destroyed. Two sinopie, on the back wall, have been saved: one, attributed to Masaccio, depicts the Lament of S. Peter; the other, attributed to Masolino, shows the Denial of S. Peter. Brings to light the discovery of painted ornament, racemes, and two female heads within medallions, on the jambs of the Gothic mullioned windows above the air. Attributes to Masolino the painting on the left jamb and to Masaccio that on the right. In addition, fragments which seem to have been part of a Crucifixion of Peter were found under the window sill above the altar in an iconographically unprecedented location. -- AATA
