Describes the processes by which various types of photographs (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, albumen prints, gelatin paper prints) were produced and discusses the types of deterioration they suffer. Recommends storage containers for each type of photograph, raising questions about the suitability of buffered materials, plastic materials in high humidity, dry mounting, and poly(vinyl acetate) adhesives for hinging. Author also alerts the reader to the special hazards of cellulose nitrate films, describing methods of identifying them, the five stages of film decomposition, and safe storage conditions. Appendices provide instructions for making protective boxes for cased objects, three-sided folders, and sealed packages; and list suppliers of photographic storage enclosures.
