A very general discussion of varnishes and their desirable qualities. The principal functions of a varnish (after Feller) are enumerated, as are the physical properties required of it. The question of solvents employed for the varnish is very important. Other properties treated are the adhesion of the polymer film to the paint surfaces and the color of the varnish. In terms of actual materials, alkyds and modified alkyds are discussed.
