Abstract
This article presents data collected on a rather ad hoc basis over a period of years, relating the effects of different types of excitation on the vibration environment in buildings used as laboratories. In many instances the measurements were taken to assist in the location or relocation of vibration-sensitive equipment. This information is used to determine levels that can be tolerated by a few particular forms of instruments, and to recommend optimum vibration environments for laboratory buildings. For completeness a section is included on the expected vibration levels resulting from a variety of natural and man-made excitations and also the basic ideas on the design of vibration isolation systems.
