This research investigates seventeen different tissues and boards advertised as acid-free and/or buffered, and sold as suitable materials for use with artifacts and other works of art. The purpose of this examination is to acquire further information regarding the composition of these products, so that a better understanding as to their quality can be gained. In order to do this, the fiber content, presence of ligneous material, surface and cold water extraction pH measurements, total acidity or degree of alkalinity of moisture-free specimens and presence of rosin size are tested. The results from this research have determined that the majority of the products fufill the stringent requirements necessary for conservation quality materials. The inclusion of lignin in one sample and the slightly acidic pH measurements of several others reinforces the need for testing of these products prior to their use.
