Describes the irreversible corrosion of shells. The shells, in this state of decay, have white powdery crystalline efflorescences on their surfaces, and in the worst cases, only a small clump of white powder is left where there had once been a whole specimen. This occurrence is Byne's disease caused by acid attack, such as acetic and formic, given off by buildings, storage and exhibition materials.
