Abstract
After desalination for a year, waterlogged wood (conifers, ilex, oak, and cork) from a Mediterranean site of the first century BC is treated with polyethylene glycol (PEG 4000). This takes place over a period of up to 18 months at a temperature between 5° and 20° C. The wood is then dried by being placed in a bath of molten PEG 4000 at 120130° C until bubbling ceases. It is then drained and slowly cooled. Shrinkage of 1.8 percent is observed. A table of the solubility of PEG 4000 at various concentrations is given. -- AATA
