The effect of violin varnishes on physical-acoustic properties of spruce resonance wood is briefly shown. Six types of varnishes, based on natural oils, resins, waxes, and dyes (linseed oil, castor oil, mastic, colophony, terpenoid resin, copal, elemi, beeswax, etc.) were used. A complex modulus of elasticity and logarithmic decrement was measured by the resonance method on Bruel & Kjaer apparatus type 3930. The paper gives useful information for restorers of violins.
