It was often possible for the researchers in this project to identify pigments solely on the basis of autoradiographic images and electron emission rate graphs. However, in some instances, microscopic examination, microchemical testing, and/or x-ray powder diffraction analyses were necessary. A scanning electron-beam microscope with an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer attachment allowed semiquantitative elemental analysis of pigments and paint films. Pigments used by 17th century Dutch and Flemish artists are discussed. The study has shown that painting techniques can be reconstructed in great detail.
