Abstract
A portion of an illustration was deliberately detached from scroll 6 of the Ippen Hijiri-e (a series of twelve Japanese scrolls completed in 1299) and mounted as a hanging scroll. This mutilation and many other 17th century scroll disassemblies are placed in the context of the rise in popularity of kakemono (hanging scrolls). -- AATA
