Abstract
Previous investigations of silver tarnishing due to H<i2>iS/flowers of sulfur/and SO<i2>i are noted. The corrosive effects on silver of H<i2>iS, OCS (Carbonyl Sulfide), SO<i2>i and CS<i2>i of varying low concentrations are investigated. H<i2>iS and OCS produce comparable sulphidation at room tempera ture (with decreased attack as the ambient temperature increases strictly in the 20°C-40°C range), while SO<i2>i and CS<i2>i are an order of magnitude less effective. A mechanism is suggested for the corrosion process. It appears that OCS should cause comparahle tarnishing to H<i2>iS in normal environments.
