Abstract
Near Riace, a statue, dating to the 5th century BC, was found in the sea. The surface was partially covered by a black artificial patina of copper sulfide, over which the corrosion products had formed. The cleaning of the surface was done mechanically, the chlorides were removed by immersion in water. The techniques of the restoration of the interior and of the cleaned surface are described in detail. -- AATA
