Abstract
Four bronze flgures, two of which had originally been assigned to the 12th century (perhaps made by Nicholas of Verdun) and the other two had been considered later copies, were formerly reattributed to the 17th and 18th centuries respectively (AATA 19-671), on the basis of thermoluminescent analysis. The present work, based on elemental analysis by x-ray fluorescence, lead-isotope ratios, and a study of fabrication technique, confirms the 18th century attribution for two of the figures, but suggests that the other two may be earlier than the 17th century, and perhaps as early as the 12th century. It is argued that the thermoluminescent results had been nullified by a later modification to the pieces that involved a reheating of the casting cores. Two illustrations, 3 tables, 7 references. -- AATA
