The internal layout of small towns can be analyzed from air photographs, excavations, or find-scatters. Street systems are varied and not always determined by through routes. There are central zones of public buildings or temples, with areas of Romanized houses and of workshops or simple housing. The relationship of building frontages to streets, the introduction of defenses, and the significance of intra- and extra-mural zones are examined.
