Abstract
Whether what is done is called archaeology or archaeometry depends upon whether the archaeologist or the archaeometrist does it. Many methods are not beyond the competence of the archaeologist, which techniques would be better employed rather than more sophisticated procedures which would not work at that site. The problem of basic and service research is discussed; the archaeometrist in France is caught in a difficult bind. The problem is seen as political rather than scientific, the resolution of which should be found in organization (Abstractor's note: and administration thereof) not in increased dialog. -- AATA
