Discusses good archaeometric research from the perspective of what proposals receive program support, in this case, funding from the National Science Foundation during the fiscal years 1978, 1979, and 1980. The anthropological bias is evident in the review process. There are three categories of archaeometric proposals: technique development research, archaeometric service, and integrated research to answer anthropological questions. The project which uses archaeometric techniques for anthropological ends frequently cannot demonstrate how to achieve the necessary integration, and thus is not funded. However, those projects designed by both archaeologist and archaeometrist fare better. Specific projects which are successful and those which are not are listed. -- AATA
