Abstract
The problem is to make real progress in answering questions about the past using the scientific techniques which are now available. Archaeological interpretation rests on a network of theory. There is a danger in allowing the available techniques to dominate the direction of the research. Service research is nevertheless research, providing new information about the past. Material culture is more than the artifacts and their technologies; it also includes the role of the artifacts and the technologies in human culture. -- AATA
