Abstract
The role that science and technology can play in the development of new methods for preservation and technology is illustrated by examples. These include the use of engineering and physics for the mechanisation of traditional restoration methods, the use of polymer chemistry for developing new methods of paper strengthening, and finally reprographic techniques for data conversion.
