Recent excavations at Red Bay in southern Labrador, Canada have focused on the burial remains of Basque fishermen from the mid-to-late 16th century. The wet, acidic soil results in poor bone preservation but many textile artifacts have been recovered. The staff of the Canadian Conservation Institute are undertaking conservation treatments and dye and weave analysis of this material. The skeletal remains of an individual enveloped in a severely disintegrated textile was removed from one of the graves by freezing with dry ice. -- AATA
