A laboratory system for the capture, storage, access, retrieval, and display of biomedical documents has been developed for research into electronic imaging technologies and potential areas of applicability to the mission of the National Library of Medicine. The initial development included magnetic disk systems for storage. The subject of this paper is the incorporation of a digital optical disk subsystem into the system to serve as a prototype for large scale archival storage.
