The main causes of deterioration of the subterranean wall paintings after excavation are dessication of the wall surfaces due to thermal and humidity changes, and environmental changes resulting from ground water, and increases in microorganisms. The environment of Torazuka was investigated before excavation; public display at first utilized simple temporary exhibition facilities, and three years later permanent display facilities were developed. The work carried out at those times is summarized. -- AATA
