Abstract
A modern approach to lining canvas paintings is described. After five years of work on the project, it has been found that the lining of very old oil paintings could be postponed by using different types of consolidation. Technical features found on paintings from the late 18th century are distinctly different from paintings from the first half of the 19th century and consequently the type of damage differs significantly. Hence, the conservation treatment is radically different as well. The relation between the technological features of an art object and its method of consolidation is emphasized.
