Abstract
Metallographic study of spearmincluding hardness testing, specific gravity measurement (which indicated corrosion condition), and chemical analysis by microprobemconfirmed initial observations and indicated iron was not carburized after being hot-forged from pure bloomery iron. Orientation of slag incursions suggests construction of the haft. Iron concretions found within the wooden shaft were analyzed. The wood was sectioned in a microtome age of tree branch was determined based on the age of the tree from which it was taken, and the wood identification is narrowed down to two choices of trees. -- AATA
