Abstract
Neutron-induced autoradiography is briefly explained; autoradiographs show the distribution patterns of pigments in which the irradiated elements occur. Autoradiography can reveal the preliminary sketch or underpainting, the rough blocking in of the subject, and the subsequent paint layers; this provides insight into the creative process of the artist. The criteria for a research reactor to be suitable for this work are presented: a relative uniform thermal neutral field, a thermal neutron flux capable of short activation duration, and minimization of intensity of high-energy neutron and gamma rays. This reactor design study was performed to examine the feasibility of modifying the thermal column facility to include a painting activation port compatible with other usages for the thermal column. A study of <i>Landscape</i> by Ralph A. Blakelock was done for the purpose of establishing a standard procedure and to identify specific needs involved in the process of exposing film to the activated painting within a vacuum cassette and obtaining the gamma spectra. -- AATA
