Abstract
A 1979 study indicated that the laser microprobe presented too many problems with regard to precision and accuracy to warrant further development nevertheless, the described equipment at Wayne State University was improved to meet the requirements of staff from the Detroit Institute of Arts. Sampling procedures have been modified as well. The laser microprobe is to be used as a tool for depth-profile analysis of various surfaces, i.e., plated surfaces, pigment layers of paintings, and decorated lacquerware. Improved mechanical stability and optical clarity have resulted in increased spectral intensities and in more predictable sample-site selections. See also AATA 15-993.
