The Seminar of the Application of Science in Examination of Works of Art
Abstract
Blue, turquoise, white, and yellow glazed brick fragments collected at the Ishtar Gate in 1954 have been analyzed by electron beam microprobe and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Petrographic thin sections of the brick were studied and neutron activation analyses were made of four clay samples from Babylon. Additional pieces of brick were carefully examined visually. Using the data obtained, the brick manufacturing processes used in the city around 570 B.C. were discussed.
