The hazards and precautions of working with paints, pastels, inks, pencils, crayons, and other painting and drawing media are discussed. Lists of highly toxic pigments, including known or probable carcinogens as well as moderately toxic or slightly toxic pigments, are given. Other hazards include the ammonia in acrylic paints, the preservative in water-based paints, the solvents in nonwater-based paints, drawing inks and permanent felt tip markers, and natural resins, including copal, rosin, damar, and Japanese lacquer. The uses of air brush, spray cans, and spray guns increase the hazards of inhalation and the risk of fire.
