In the collections of the Museum of Central Bohemia at Roztoky about 50% of the items are infested with wood boring beetles and other pests. Conventional methods of conservation, such as chemicals and gas have not proved totally effective. Ionizing radiation treatment, however, has been shown to rid the irradiated object of woodworm while leaving no harmful residue. The relative drawback is that it does not protect the object from further infestation. The construction of a conservation irradiation facility is described.
