The microscope was controlled by a computer which could be programmed to make analyses of the microscope image. Samples were presented to the system in standard form -- thin transverse sections stained with safranin and mounted on microscope slides. The principle of operation, accuracy, and reproducibility of results are discussed. Quantitative measurements of cell dimensions were produced quickly and the data processing capability of the computer allowed rapid evaluation of statistical perameters. -- AATA
