During conservation of the wooden sculpture in 1983 a detailed visual analysis of its structure and paint layers was made. The sculpture is constructed of seven blocks of wood. Although no samples were taken, the wood is most likely lindenwood with the exception of the base which is most likely fir. Günther's sculpting technique which achieves a high degree of finish is discussed. Although the artist did not paint the sculpture himself he supervised this process. A hot solution of animal glue was first applied to the wood followed by a thinly applied ivory-colored gesso ground. The original paint consisted of pigments mixed with egg. Previous restorations are documented and discussed. In the present cleaning all overpaint was removed with small scalpels. -- AATA
