Abstract
The use of x-ray radiography is normally confined to the study of metallic artifacts, but it is also useful in the examination of opaque glasses that contain metallic oxide opacifiers and colorants. Some ancient opaque glasses have been studied and information about the basic glass, molding technique and the physical shape of the objects has been obtained. For composite objects, the methods of mounting and attaching the individual pieces of glass can also be investigated, and these are often found to be different to those that might be expected from visual examination. The quality of any restoration or conservation work can also be examined because broken/glued edges are revealed by x-ray radiography. The method is non-destructive and the results can be obtained fairly quickly. Its main advantage is that it allows the same information to be obtained for opaque glasses as can be gained for transparent samples by visual inspection. -- AATA
