Abstract
The following characteristic values of clays from three pottery centers, Morne Sion, Fiette, and Pointe Caraibe in the southwest of St. Lucia, were determined: moisture content, grain size distribution, chemical and mineralogical composition, plasticity, behavior under conditions of drying and burning, temperature of Seger-cone collapse and water absorptive capacity. Results from these examinations resemble the same picture of a sandy clay with a highly plastic component. Mineralogical investigations by means of XRD and DTA analyses show the presence of smectic and halloysitic clay minerals, being obviously responsible for the high water absorptive capacity. The very moderate ratio of medium grain sizes (20mum) results in high porosity and low mechanical strength of the pottery. Technological, chemical, and mineralogical investigations on pottery as well as on raw material from St. Lucia (Lesser Antilles) are presented. The aim of the work was to examine the quality of the clay as ceramic raw materials by means of common investigation methods and to offer proposals for quality improvements. An improvement of the quality of the ceramics might be possible by enrichment with medium grain size components as well as by increasing the process of sun drying and aging of the raw material. The exploration of stronger weathered soil horizons, where decreasing smectite contents are to be expected, could lead to further improvement of the quality.
