This short article complements the analytical investigations (see following chapter 2) concerning the clay material brought by the author from the Caribbean in 1982 and 1983. The author and his assistant, both from the Institute of Ethnology in Vienna, maintain a collaborative project with the Folk Research Centre of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Within the scope of this project, also the traditional pottery was recorded in the course of two field researches. The crude natural clay is softened and mellowed through the process of ageing and after being kneaded is shaped by coil building into jars, bowls, lids and coalpots. Coalpots are little ceramic stoves used in kitchens. The manufacture of these pottery products is expected to show a downward trend because of the import of gas cylinders and liquid gas. It was found that even the attempt to find a ready market for tourist arts has been ineffective.
