Abstract
To carry out pigment analyses six samples - preferably containing all paint layers - were taken at previously damaged areas of the painting and cross-sections were prepared. Optical analysis as well as microanalyses were carried out, the most outstanding results telling that in the taken samples of the blue parts of the virgin's cape as well as of the sky ultramarine was used as blue pigment. As green copper-pigment Raphael used verdigris, in the red part of the virgin's robe only madder lake was found. The other samples show the typical pigments having been used at that time. To carry out analyses of painting media three surface-samples were taken and analyzed by means of gas-chromatography (GC) and mass-spectrometry (MS). In all investigated samples the media turned out to be very lean egg tempera. The analyses of the painting media were kindly carried out by Dr. J.S. Mills at The National Gallery, Scientific Department in London. All samples were taken by Prof. H. Dietrich, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.
