Abstract
Effigy pottery associated with burials and displaying both molded and handformed representations of deities and humans is widely found in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico and is mostly identified with Zapotec-dominated occupations of the first millennium A.D. Pottery of this type occurs in stylistic variants that can be equated with absolute time-periods. Due to its aesthetic quality, it has often been the subject of falsification. Of the Zapotec effigy pottery retained in the Museum für Völkerkunde, Vienna, a group of seven pieces with relatively well documented collection history is of special interest.
